PSN ONDO STATE CHAPTER COURTESY VISIT TO THE NEW UNIMED VICE CHANCELLOR ON 13TH NOV. 2025

SPEECH BY PHARM. BABALOLA OSABIYA TAIWO, FPSN
Chairman, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Ondo State branch During a Courtesy Visit to Professor Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, Vice Chancellor, University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo

Thursday, 13th November 2025

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe,

Principal Officers of the University,

Distinguished Deans and Directors,

Members of the University Community,

Ladies and Gentlemen.

It is my honour and privilege to lead the delegation of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Ondo State Branch, on this courtesy visit to you, Professor Adejuyigbe, the newly appointed Vice Chancellor of our great University of Medical Sciences, Ondo.

On behalf of the entire body of Pharmacists in Ondo State, I wish to heartily congratulate you on your well-deserved appointment. Your track record of excellence, leadership, and dedication to medical education assures us that the University is in capable and visionary hands.

The PSN has been a proud stakeholder and partner in the growth of this University since its inception. We recall with appreciation the collaborative relationship we enjoyed with your predecessor, Professor Segun Fatusin, and we look forward to an even stronger partnership under your dynamic leadership.

Madam Vice Chancellor, our main point of interest in this University remains the Olu Akinkugbe Faculty of Pharmacy. It is a growing faculty with enormous potential to produce highly skilled Pharmacists who will serve humanity with competence and compassion.

We therefore appeal that your administration continues to give special attention to its development by nurturing it, equipping it with the necessary human and material resources, and supporting the recruitment of qualified academic and non-academic staff.

As a remedy to the current shortage of manpower, may I respectfully suggest that the University consider engaging some of our members who hold Master’s degrees and Fellowships of the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacy as adjunct lecturers. These professionals possess vast knowledge and practical experience that can enrich the teaching and mentorship of students. We must tap all available professional resources to achieve excellence.

We also plead with you, Madam Vice Chancellor, to see yourself as the mother of all the various professionals within the University community, relating with everyone fairly and justly, and ensuring that every discipline receives its rightful recognition and share in the growth of this great institution.

Permit me to remind you of a proposal earlier initiated by your predecessor, the naming of a space (Lecture Theater or Laboratory) within the Faculty of Pharmacy in honour of the PSN Ondo State. We humbly appeal that this noble request receive your kind and favorable consideration, as it will further cement our partnership with the University.

We also advocate for a closer relationship between the University and the UNIMED Teaching Hospital, particularly in the area of accreditation for internship and hospital practice for students of the Faculty of Pharmacy. Strengthening this linkage will provide excellent clinical exposure and practical experience for our future Pharmacists.

Madam Vice Chancellor, please be assured that the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Ondo State Branch, will continue to stand by the University as a dependable partner. We remain ready to collaborate with your administration and the Faculty of Pharmacy in all endeavors aimed at advancing pharmaceutical education, research, and community health service.

Once again, congratulations, Ma, on your appointment. We pray that your tenure will bring unprecedented growth, peace, and distinction to the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo.

Thank you, and God bless you, MA.

PHARMACEUTICAL SOCIETY OF NIGERIA, ONDO STATE BRANCH COURTESY VISIT TO THE COMMISSIONER OF POLICE ON 14TH OCTOBER 2024

ADDRESS BY PHARM. BABALOLA OSABIYA TAIWO, FPSN
Chairman, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Ondo State.
During a Courtesy Visit to the Commissioner of Police Ondo State on 14th October 2025

The Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal,
Distinguished Officers,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

On behalf of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Ondo State Branch, I bring you warm greetings for what you do to secure Ondo State. We commend your command for the remarkable reduction in crime rates across the state since your assumption of office. Your proactive leadership, professionalism, and community engagement have indeed made Ondo State safer, and we deeply appreciate your efforts. One of the ways of showing our appreciation is to donate some health deliverables and Pharmaceuticals into your clinic. However, our visit is impromptu, so we will come back to make some donations to your clinic shortly.

We are here to reaffirm our readiness to support and collaborate with the Command in strengthening the security architecture of our state. As professionals and responsible citizens, we firmly believe in the philosophy of “See Something, Say Something.” We are located in the neighborhood we are always at an advantage to “see something”

Sir, you will agree with me that we need not underscore the importance of Pharmacists in the society as the custodians of medicines. If you cannot get a medicine in a Pharmacy, where would you get it?
The late President of America, JF Kennedy said:
The Pharmacists are indispensable, if you don’t have one you have to invent .Our scope of practice covers research and development, manufacturing, distribution, wholesaling, and retailing, as well as counselling, point-of-care services, and dispensing to produce a favourable outcome. More expanded responsibilities have been bestowed on us as a result of AI and digital technology.

Our license empowers us to handle controlled substances, narcotics, Prescription-Only Medicines (POM), poisons, and over-the-counter preparations.

In certain necessary circumstances, we are empowered to have in our custody small quantities of unregistered drugs without local substitute with the permission of the controlling government agencies, medicines strictly for emergency medical use, dispensed only on prescription, and never in quantities that could suggest misuse or diversion. A dying patient may need it!

As a Society, we maintain strong partnerships with various government agencies in the fight against drug and substance abuse. Every year, we organise enlightenment programmes in secondary schools across the state to educate students on the dangers of drug misuse. We also extend our campaigns to motor parks and community centres, while our members provide valuable information to your officers whenever the need arises.

However, we wish to bring to your kind attention a matter of concern. In recent times, some of our members have had unpleasant encounters with a few of your Officers, in our major towns like Akure and Owo, who visit their premises, often in the evening hours, to make arrests or carry out searches. In the process, some of these officers have interfered with professional areas such as our poison cupboards. There are procedures in the laws guiding every profession as regards Pharmacy inspection and compliance.  We believe these actions were not deliberate, but rather due to a lack of full understanding of the professional boundaries between the roles of the Police, PCN, NAFDAC, and NDLEA. We therefore appeal for your kind intervention to guide your officers appropriately, so that we can all continue to work together harmoniously in the overall interest of the state. We are confident that with your exemplary leadership, this matter will be amicably resolved.

Finally, in the spirit of partnership, we would also be delighted to carry out periodic medical outreaches in any of your formations or approved communities during some of our annual events as part of our corporate social responsibility and our commitment to a healthier, safer, and drug-free society.

Thank you for granting us this audience and for your warm reception. We value your friendship, your service, and your dedication to the peace and security of Ondo State.

We remain your partners in progress.

Thank you and God bless you.

PHARMACY WEEK / WORLD PHARMACY DAY CELEBRATION 2025, THEME: THINK HEALTH, THINK PHARMACISTS

SPEECH FOR PHARMACY WEEK / WORLD PHARMACISTS DAY 2025

Delivered by: Pharm. Babalola Osabiya Taiwo FPSN
Chairman, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Ondo State
Date: 25th September 2025

Distinguished colleagues, esteemed elders of our noble profession, invited guests, ladies and gentlemen,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the celebration of Pharmacy Week 2025 and the commemoration of World Pharmacists Day.

The theme for this year’s celebration, “Think Health, Think Pharmacists,” could not have been more appropriate. It perfectly reflects the central role of the Pharmacy profession in healthcare as an indispensable stakeholder in healing and well-being.

Pharmacy is not just a profession, it is a noble calling, rooted in history and service. From the palaces of Pharaohs in ancient Egypt, where remedies were prepared for Kings, to the biblical account of King Hezekiah, where herbs were applied to heal infection, the foundation of Pharmacy has always been healing and restoration. Over centuries, mankind has studied plants, minerals, animals, and natural resources, developing the science of phytomedicine and gradually refining it into dosage forms: oral, parenteral, and inhalation. Today, Pharmacy also extends to the manufacturing of materials and medical devices.

In Nigeria, this noble story took a structured form in 1927 with the establishment of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), which has since grown to every state of the federation as the strong voice and custodian of our profession.

The pharmacy has witnessed a remarkable transformation. From apothecaries compounding herbs and tinctures in small bottles, we now embrace cutting-edge technology, biotechnology, nanomedicine, personalised therapy, and digital health solutions. The scope of Pharmacy today is vast, encompassing community practice, academia, research and development, industrial pharmacy, regulatory affairs, and hospital consultancy services.

A striking transformation is evident in our hospital services. The old order of merely dispensing medicines has given way to expert clinical consultations, where Pharmacists review prescriptions, monitor therapies, prevent harmful interactions, and optimise outcomes. Indeed, every patient who leaves his home for the hospital does so with one expectation: to see the Physician and to return home with medicines that will take care of his ailment. This is the confidence every patient has in the Pharmacy. A visit to the hospital without medicines is a disappointment, an unacceptable adventure. That is how important the Pharmacist is in health service delivery.

Pharmacists have made landmark contributions to medicine worldwide: from vaccines to antiretrovirals, novel drug delivery systems to groundbreaking phytomedicine research. In Nigeria, the Nigerian Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) stands as testimony to this relevance, driving research into local remedies and innovations.

Beyond laboratories and hospitals, Pharmacists have also touched communities. Through its technical arm, ACPN, it has organised campaigns against counterfeit drugs, championed the fight against substance abuse, and delivered health outreaches in schools, marketplaces, motor parks, and rural areas. Our medical outreaches, particularly those championed by the Young Pharmacists Group (YPG), have touched the less privileged both in our cities and in hard-to-reach rural communities. These efforts have not only improved health outcomes but also helped reduce insecurity in society by stemming drug abuse and its link to crime. Indeed, when you empower a community with safe medicines and health education, you also build a safer society.

Pharmaceutical Society Of Nigeria, Ondo State

Today marks the fourth day, the closing day of our Pharmacy Week activities. I must express my profound appreciation to the Pharmacy Week Committee, led by our Vice Chairman, Pharm. (Mrs.) Yemisi Akerejola, for her tireless leadership and coordination, and to the YPG Chairman, Pharm. Mubarak Okikiola, for his outstanding effort and sacrifice.

I am happy that our children are already stepping into our shoes. We truly have capable hands to succeed us and do even better. These are the modern leaders who will shape and rule the future of Pharmacy practice.

We also celebrate those who laid the foundation for today’s vibrant YPG, including past coordinators such as Pharm. Nelson, Pharm. Miss Jumoke Akinye and Pharm. Miss Tolu Adamolekun, PharmD, whose sacrifice and dedication repositioned YPG in Ondo State.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Ondo State, therefore deems it fit to acknowledge and celebrate their stewardship, with MAW this afternoon. Their efforts remind us that leadership is about service, sacrifice, and creating pathways for those coming after.

My address will not be complete without the appreciation of the Board of Fellows (BOF), past Chairmen of PSN, Chairmen of technical groups and all past Exco members who laid solid foundations. In a very special way, we posthumously honour our fallen heroes and heroines of Pharmacy. May their noble souls rest in perfect peace.

At this point, I will kindly ask that all the active committee members who worked tirelessly for this Pharmacy Week stand up for recognition. We salute your dedication and commitment.

Colleagues, ladies and gentlemen, the theme of this year’s celebration, “Talk Health, Talk Pharmacists,” is more than a slogan, it is our reality. The Pharmacist is, and will continue to be, an indispensable partner in health, both in Nigeria and across the world.

As we leave here today, let us remember that we carry the burden of others in service to humanity.

May God bless the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria.

May God bless Ondo State.

May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Thank you.
